Lithium Ion Capacitor Market Overview
Lithium-ion Capacitor Market Size was valued at USD 26.5 Million in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 42 Million by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 5.2%
An LIC is a heterogeneous energy storage device in which technology has been borrowed from lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. This hybrid technology thus fills the gap between the high energy density provided by lithium-ion batteries and the high power density provided by supercapacitors, solving several unique applications requiring high energy and power capabilities.
The Lithium-ion Capacitor has two electrodes—a positive electrode (cathode) comprising activated carbon, just like in supercapacitors, and a negative electrode containing lithium-doped carbon, just as in a lithium-ion battery. Mostly used is an organic solution with dissolved lithium salts as the electrolyte. Also included in this cell is electrostatic energy storage through double-layer capacitance and electrochemical energy storage due to lithium intercalation. Lithium ions move between the electrodes during charging and discharging in a Lithium-ion Capacitor. In the case of charging, lithium ions from the electrolyte diffuse into the anode's carbon structure through intercalation, whereas on the surface of another electrode composed of activated carbon, adsorption of anions takes place concomitantly. Such a dual mechanism raises the value of stored energy, as compared to traditional supercapacitors. The opposite occurs on discharge: lithium ions move back into the electrolyte from the cathode, while anions are desorbed from the cathode surface area.
Compared to traditional energy storage technologies, LICs have some advantages. Their energy density is higher than that of supercapacitors, typically 10 to 20 Wh/kg, about 3 to 5 times more than traditional supercapacitors. Furthermore, the device has high power density and can experience quite rapid charge/discharge cycles without significant degradation. Apart from this, it has a quite long cycle life compared with lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium Ion Capacitor Market Dynamics
Key Drivers of Target Market:
Growing Demand for Electric Vehicles:
- Rapid growth in the electric vehicle market is a major driver for LICs to apply regenerative braking and peak power delivery. This can be explained by the fact that LICs can store and provide large amounts of energy in a very short period, which optimizes an electric vehicle's performance and potential range. In addition, LICs can contribute to prolonging the life of a battery by reducing the charge-discharge cycles of the device.
High Cost:
- LICs are a good fit for storing energy from renewable intermittent sources like solar and wind power. This is because LICs can charge and discharge large amounts of energy quickly, making them very instrumental in balancing fluctuating output from such sources. In addition, LICs enhance the efficiency of renewable energy systems by reducing the energy loss resulting from curtailment.
Restrains:
High Production Cost:
- The production cost for LICs is currently higher than that of conventional batteries and supercapacitors, so their application in such a wide range is greatly suppressed. This is attributed to several factors, such as high raw material costs, a complex manufacturing process, and a small scale of production. However, since the market for LICs is building up, economies of scale will eventually help bring down the cost of production, making it more competitive with other technologies for energy storage.
Opportunities:
Emerging Applications:
- They can potentially disrupt consumer electronics, medical devices, aerospace, and defense industries. For example, LICs can power wearable devices like smartwatches and fitness trackers and portable medical devices like defibrillators and insulin pumps. They can also serve industries like the aerospace industry in fields such as electric aircraft and drones and energy storage from solar panels. For the defense sector, LICs have applications in powering military vehicles and equipment and providing stand-by power to critical systems, to mention just a few.

Lithium Ion Capacitor Market Key Issues Addressed
- In April 2024, Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) uncovered a promising battery innovation that could transform portable electricity. Professor Jeung Ku Kang and his colleagues work on sodium-ion batteries, which are comparable in design to traditional lithium-ion batteries and can be built using the same industrial techniques. In these batteries, sodium ions replace lithium ions in the cathode, and lithium salts in the electrolyte (the liquid that transports charge between the cell electrodes) are exchanged for sodium salts.
- In July 2023, Asahi Kasei started licensing technology for designing and manufacturing lithium-ion capacitors (LiCs) using its patented lithium pre-doping method. The novel proprietary doping method allows LiCs to be manufactured at a lower cost using widely available materials and equipment used to manufacture lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) while allowing for the design and manufacture of LiCs with increased capacity and improved input/output performance. The licensing agreement comprises Asahi Kasei's intellectual property relating to LiC technology and technical skills such as cell design and manufacturing using pilot equipment. Asahi Kasei hopes to help licensees worldwide cut LiC development timelines and achieve low-cost LiC manufacturing using current equipment by licensing its technology.
