Global Seed Coating Materials Market Overview

Seed coating materials market accounted for USD 1.97 Billion in 2020 and is estimated to be USD 4.53 Billion by 2030 and is anticipated to register a CAGR of 8.8%.

Seed coating, is a process in which seeds are directly coated with chemicals and fertilizers, repulsive agents and crop protection chemicals to enhance the seed performance. Seed coating protects the seed surface to enhance protection of the seeds against fungal and pathogenic attacks. These seeds offer better yield and disease resistance which helps in overall crop productivity. The aim of seed coating is to improve seed appearance and handling characteristics (e.g., seed weight and size) and also to attach compounds which can enhance the seed performance as well as protect the seeds from the pathogens.

Another method of seed coating is film coating, in which plant protectants are encapsulated on seeds that don’t require increasing weight or changing the shape of the seed prior to planting. It is an economical method to reduce seed bridging in planters. The primary advantage of seed layering is, it controls seed infection and protect the plant at an early stage from foliar infection. Secondary advantage is that it reduces disease pressure in the main season of forming crop.

Global Seed Coating Materials Market Drivers & Restraints

Rising Adoption of hybrid and modified crops

Increasing adoption of hybrid and genetically modified crops to increase the crop production is the major factor that drives the growth of global seed coating materials. Further, increasing number of government initiatives for promoting sustainable farming in developing countries, as well as innovative farming techniques may foster the growth of global seed coating materials market. Moreover, increasing awareness for commercial usage of seeds, leads to increased value of seed coating materials also boosts the growth of global seed coating materials market. In addition, growing awareness regarding the advantages of seed treatment such as better seed performance and seed germination enhancement in adverse conditions is expected to drive the growth of global seed coating materials market over a forecast period. However, limited usage and difficulty to get uniform coating on the seed hampers the growth of global seed coating materials market.

However, transportation and handling and compatibility with active ingredient or dye, temperature and stringent regulations imposed by various governments regarding the use of chemicals for seed treatment may restrain the growth of global seed coating market over the forecast period.
