Health officials in Maharashtra and Gujarat have reported an increase in cases of mucormycosis, a fungal infection that can cause blindness, severe illness, and in some cases, even death, among COVID-19 survivors. In response to an increase in cases of mucormycosis, or "black fungus" infection, the Gujarat government has begun establishing dedicated wards in hospitals for COVID-19 survivors and has acquired 5,000 vials of a medication used in its treatment. In Maharashtra, mucormycosis has caused at least eight COVID-19 survivors to lose vision in one eye, and 200 more are undergoing treatment.
