Diabetic Macular Edema Pipeline Review 2021 Overview

Diabetic Macular Edema- Pipeline Review

Macular edema is aggregation of fluid in the macula. Macula is an area in the center of the retina. The retina is located at the back of the eye and is light-sensitive tissue. The macula is the part of the retina accounted for sharp, straight-ahead vision. The fluid which is aggregated into macula causes it to swell and thicken, which distorts vision. The primary indication of macular edema is wavy or blurry vision near or in the center of our field of vision. Another symptoms may be washed out or faded appearance of color. Most people suffering from macular edema will have indications that range from slightly blurry vision to noticeable vision loss.

According to data published by National Eye Institute, around 7.7 million Americans have diabetic retinopathy and out of those about 750,000 also have DME. The current study reports that non-Hispanic African Americans are three times more likely to develop DME than non-Hispanic whites. This is attributed mainly due to the growing incidence of diabetes in the African American population.

In recent years, Pharmaceutical companies have targeted several therapies combinations, towards different pathways for the treatment of DME. Various conventional treatments are aimed at sustaining the patient’s vision and decreasing future vision loss through medication and laser surgery. Boehringer Ingelheim and pharmaceutical research company Pharmaxis declared that Boehringer Ingelheim has introduced the Phase IIa study ROBIN (Randomized study of orally administered BI 1467335 in patients suffering from Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy without center-involved diabetic macular edema).

Approximately 70% of pipeline drugs for Diabetic Macular Edema are in phase 2 clinical stage. Several government institutes and research organizations are conducting clinical trials combined with pharmaceutical companies to treat and prevent Diabetic Macular Edema.
