Live Cell Imaging Market Overview

Live Cell Imaging Market was valued at US$ 2.2 Billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.90% to reach US$ 3.4Billion by 2034.

Live Cell Imaging is used for visualizing slow cellular processes which are below threshold of human perception. Live Cell Imaging is currently performed by using fluorescence microscopy and other technology like time lapse microscopy, high content screening are also used. Cell Imaging has become an important analytical tool in study of biomedical research like pharmacology, cell biology, neurobiology, and developmental biology. Imaging of fixed cells & tissues requires high illumination intensity & long exposure time. Various cell culture media are used for imaging media which contains vitamins, amino acids, nucleic acid constituents, lipids, sugars, trace elements, tri-carboxylic acid cycle intermediates, and co-enzymes, etc. Important step in tissue culture media is controlling oxygen concentration, buffering capacity, pH, viscocity, osmolarity, and surface tension. Green fluorescent protein is most commonly used fluorescent protein in imaging cells due to its unique chemical structure, chemically inert and relatively small. Green fluorescent protein is found in natural sources like sea anemones, corals, crustaceans, hydrozoans, and basic chordate animals. Widefield Systems helps in providing flexible system for live cell imaging. Widefield Systems allows fast acquisition, with low cost and flexible excitation. Transmitted light is used with fluorescence microscopy for determining cell position, shape, and motility which are used for investigating mitosis and apoptosis in cell. Phase contrast and differential interference contrast are most commonly used microscopy in cell imaging. In Confocal microscopy Time-lapse imaging of living cells is enhanced by improved resolution. Confocal analysis of live cell has become a good option due to its less phototoxic dyes for labeling and increased efficiency of photons. FRET (Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer) helps in increasing spatial resolution of fluorescence to less than 10 nm and also used in monitoring protein to protein interactions inside the living cells.  Fluorescence Quantum Dots are used for live cell imaging due to their enhanced brightness and resistance to metabolic degradation and photo-damage. However, rising prevalence of chronic diseases has enhanced the live cell imaging market growth.

Live Cell Imaging Market Dynamics

Rise in prevalence of chronic diseases and rate of urbanization is one of the leading factors for the Live Cell Imaging Market growth.  Growing number of chronic diseases has driven the target market growth. Urbanization has given rise in consumption of western food, processed food, frozen packed foods, which are unhealthy and affect the health in human being. Urbanization has given rise in disposable income which allows the individual to enhance their lifestyle, consuming high amount of red meat and animal derived food, fats & oils, sugar, sodium, which has affected the digestive health. Eating processed and unhealthy food, lack of exercise affect the health causing chronic disease like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal diseases, cancer, etc. Consumption of unhealthy and processed food cause the indigestion, constipation, acidity, bloating of stomach, belching, flatulence, vomiting, feeling uncomfortable, feeling heavy, etc. which has led in rising gastrointestinal diseases. Use of GFP (Green fluorescent protein) in labeling cancer cells in cytoplasm has allowed visualization of nuclear-cytoplasmic dynamics of cancer cells in vivo, cell cycle position, apoptosis, mitosis, and differential behavior of cytoplasm & nucleus occurs during cancer cell deformation. In 2022, according to National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases between 60 million to 70 million Americans are suffering from gastrointestinal disorders which has led to 250,000 deaths each year. For instance, in 2016, (NIH), the relationship between cancer incidence and urbanization in Iran were conducted by using Quantile Regression. Data obtained by Ministry of Health & Medical Education and relationship between urbanization and cancer morbidity was investigated by quantile regression and determined that breast cancers, pancreas, prostate, colorectal and lung cancers increasing with rate of urbanization. 90th percentile was maximum increase rate of breast cancer. 95th percentile was of prostate cancer, 75th percentile was of colorectal cancer, 95th percentile for lung cancer and 10th percentile for pancreas cancer. According to the results, it was determined that there was significant impact of rising urbanization on cancer morbidity due to risk factors like more pollution in urban areas, poor nutrition food, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol intake, etc. For instance, in 2020, according to (PMC), urban population was 36.6% to 44.8% in 1970-1994 and expected to increase till 61.1% till 2025. Around 70%-80% of colorectal cancer incidence in urban population occurs due to unhealthy lifestyle and environmental factors. According to data published by United Nations in 2018, about 55% of the world’s population resided in urban areas, and it is projected that this percentage will increase over the forecast period. However, the growth in prevalence of chronic disease and population in urban areas boosts the demand for Live Cell Imaging market.

                                                  Recent technological advancement

Recent technological advancement in live cell imaging has become the major factor in target market growth. Recent advancement in fluorescent reporters and microscopy technology has provided fascinating new insights to dynamic development mechanism. Advancement in computational methods has become the useful and important tool in developing new & improved cell imaging technique. Live cell imaging provides current status of cell or organism. Substantial advancement in optics, fluorescent tag technology and electronics has made live cell imaging easily accessible and more versatile for scientists. Today’s microscopy has offered real time & dynamic perspective of developmental physiology, quantification & correlation of process. Photoactivation is recently developed new technological method used for monitoring gene expression, protein transport, etc. Specially designed dyes like photoactivated-green-fluorescent protein (paGFP) or Kaede is used in photoactivation method for labelling selective areas of interest within organism or cell. These specially designed dyes are fused to protein of interest for studying its expression, transport dynamics by use of FRAP (Fluorescence recovery after photo-bleaching) or particle tracking. FRET (Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer) has become useful tool for quantification of protein-DNA interactions, protein-protein interactions, and protein conformational changes. FRAP (Fluorescence recovery after photo-bleaching) is used for monitoring protein & vesicle trafficking. Quantitative imaging of functional changes in cardiovascular functions – new advancement in optical microscopy has provided various ways for imaging the beating heart, and has provided insight into embryonic cardiovascular function. Rapid Confocal Imaging with LSM 5 LIVE has enabled for tracking trajectories of individual blood cells which were moving through circulatory system in mouse embryos & zebrafish. However, recent advancement in live cell imaging technique is expected to give boost growth in target market.

Restrains:

However, damage of cells due to extended exposure of fluorescent light, various technical limitations, addition of dyes and probes to membrane system may interfere with liposomal delivery system properties, incorrect choice of dyes may result in inaccurate data interpretation in fluorescence microscopy. Confocal microscopy is diffraction limited and unable to produce high definition images of oligo-lamellar liposomes and SUVs. However, technical limitations and some disadvantages caused due to incorrect choice of dyes, and extended exposure which cause damage to cells may somewhat restrain the Live Cell Imaging market.
