Leukapheresis Market Overview
Leukapheresis is the process in which abnormal WBCs (white blood cells) are removed from circulating blood in patients. It is used in separation and collection of white blood cells. Leukapheresis is the first step in treatment called as CAR-T- cell therapy (chimeric antigen receptor). Leukapheresis is offered to patients when their cancer returns back. In initial management of leukastasis, leukapheresis is indicated in patients with myeloid leukemias, hyperleukocytosis in acute leukemias and high risk in patients developing such complications. Leukapheresis is used for hyperleukocytosis as an invasive treatment. Leukapheresis is used in patients having high count of WBCs and in treating CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia). In leukapheresis procedure blood is passed through machine which takes out WBCs and returns other blood cells & plasma back in bloodstream. Patients with high developing leukostasis are checked for contraindications for leukapheresis like instable circulation, APL, cardiovascular comorbidities and coagulation disorder. Apheresis machine is used in leukapheresis. Apheresis machine is a device which helps in receiving blood removed from donor’s body or patients and separate into platelets, plasma, red blood cells and white blood cells. Leukapheresis is commonly performed in hospitals or facility which is specialized and equipped with apheresis machine. Wide applications and rising prevalence of leukemia has driven the positive impact on Leukapheresis market growth.

According to the results, it was determined that there was significant impact of rising urbanization on cancer morbidity due to risk factors like more pollution in urban areas, poor nutrition food, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol intake, etc. According to data published by United Nations in 2018, about 55% of the world’s population resided in urban areas, and it is projected that this percentage will increase over the forecast period. Adverse reactions like hypocalcemia, blood loss, low blood volume reaction, allergic reaction, bleeding risk due to extracorporeal circulation of whole blood components and use of anticoagulants during leukapheresis process increase risk of hemorrhage. Common side effects caused by leukapheresis includes, muscle spasms, numbness, tingling in feet, hands and around mouth.
