However, the spherical tanks occupy more space, which ultimately reduces the overall cargo carrying capacity of the ship. - Membrane-Type Tanks: The membrane-type tanks are the most widely used containment system in LNG carriers today. These tanks are constructed with a thin layer, called a membrane, which is supported by insulation and attached directly to the inner hull of the vessel. The membrane itself is typically constructed of invar, a type of nickel-steel alloy with an extremely low coefficient of expansion. Compared with Moss-type tanks, this system offers a higher cargo capacity, as the tanks follow the shape of the hull, giving maximum utilization of available space. This type also is more efficient and preferred in new vessel constructions due to better space utilization and reduced building costs.
- Self-Supporting Prismatic Tanks: These are less common, although used in some LNG carriers. The self-supporting prismatic tanks are of prismatic shape, and because of that, they are able to utilize the space within the hull better than spherical tanks. Like Moss-type tanks, they are self-supporting and therefore, they don't rely on the hull for structural support. Such designs are useful in ships where greater volumes are needed in terms of cargo capacity and flexibility with loading and off-loading procedures. Prismatic tanks do seem to offer a good balance between the structural strength taken from spherical tanks and space efficiency found in the membrane type.
Propulsion type insights:
- Steam Turbine Propulsion: For decades, steam turbine propulsion held sway over LNG carriers. The system involves using steam—obtained by burning boil-off gas—to drive the turbines that propel the ship. Although it is reliable and simple, a steam turbine is less efficient against modern propulsion systems, which means higher fuel consumption and associated operational costs. Even though it has largely been replaced by more efficient technologies, some older LNG carriers still operate with steam turbines.
- Dual-Fuel Diesel Electric: Dual-Fuel Diesel Electric drive solutions are more efficient than the steam turbine. The DFDE setup vessel's engines are capable of running on diesel and LNG—the boil-off gas.
