When it comes to straightening teeth, clear aligners are orthodontic devices that are a clear, plastic alternative to braces. The effectiveness of clear aligners has been subject to modifications, making evaluation challenging. A 2014 systematic review concluded that the quality of published studies needed to be higher to determine their efficacy. Based on personal experience, they appear beneficial for mild crowding of the front teeth. Still, they are not advised for children and are less successful than traditional braces for several other problems. In particular, when there are no jawbone abnormalities, they are recommended for "mild to moderate crowding (1–6 mm) and mild to moderate spacing (1–6 mm)". They are also recommended for individuals who, following a course of treatment, experienced a relapse. An orthodontist, dentist, or, in the case of home-based systems, the patient is involved in clear aligner treatment, obtaining a patient's tooth mold, which is used to create a digital dental scan. Aligners are made for each stage the computerized model proposes between the current and ideal tooth placements. Each aligner is worn for 22 hours every day for a week or two. These gradually shift the teeth into the alignment the patient, the dentist, and the orthodontist decide upon. A course of treatment typically lasts 13.5 months. No manufacturer has been able to get an injunction against another manufacturer despite violation litigation.
