Global Intraocular Lens IOLs Market Overview

Intraocular Lens Market was valued at US$ 4.6 Billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.30% to reach US$ 8 Billion by 2034.

Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are artificial, permanent lenses which can replace eye’s natural lens for restoring near & distant vision. Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are commonly used in cataract surgery for replacing diseased lens. Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) help in restoring the sight and allowing to enjoy life with clear vision. Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) work as a natural lens, as light ray enters the eye IOL refracts the light rays which help to see with accuracy. Lens implant has various focusing power like eyeglasses or contact lenses. Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) is placed into lens capsule by replacing clouded lens. A patient with severe myopia, nearsightedness are considered for Intraocular Lenses (IOLs). Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) implant is the artificial replacement of lens of eyes and a part of surgery to fix the cataracts. IOLs implant is made of clear plastics. Monofocal Intraocular Lens is most common and it stays focused at fixed distance. Multifocal implant is like glasses with progressive or bifocal lens, this lens help to see things at different distances. Accomodating Intraocular Lens is a flexible option which acts like natural lens & focuses at more than one distance which makes us less likely to need reading glasses. Toric Intraocular Lens is used if one has astigmatism or cornea. Intraocular Lenses do not break down over person’s lifetime and don’t need to be replaced. Cataract-impaired lens of eye is removed gently through tiny incision which is made on edge of cornea. Lens is removed & replaced with Toric Intraocular Lenses. Intraocular Lens surgical procedure takes about 15 to 45 minutes for completion. Intraocular Lenses used to correct wide range of vision problems like hyperopia, myopia, presbyopia, astigmatism, etc. Most commonly IOL is used for vision correction as part of cataract surgery. Intraocular Lenses are approx. 1/3 size of a dime. Intraocular Lenses are circular in center & has arms called as haptics on either side which hold it in place. Refractive lens exchange is procedure when one uses IOL technology for improving their vision in absence of cataracts. Intraocular Lenses replaces the eyes natural lens. Firstly, lens is removed by process called as phacoemulsification. Small incision is made in edge of cornea, then lens is broken into small pieces & are rinsed from eye, then IOL is folded & inserted through small incision so that it can rest in same clear capsule where natural lens once did. While determining optimal power for IOL, position of lens within eye, length of eye, curvature of cornea are all considered and extensive measurements are taken before surgery. Cataracts are common and leading cause of blindness in older demographics.

Global Intraocular Lens IOLs Market Dynamics

Rising prevalence of diabetes, eye diseases and rate of urbanization is one of the leading factors for the Intraocular Lens Market growth. Age related eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy, cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration are leading cause of blindness & low vision. Common eye disorders are strabismus and amblyopia. With aging population eye disorders are increasing.  In U.S. most prevalent disabling childhood condition are vision disorders which includes, strabismus, amblyopia, & significant refractive errors. Other eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, retinoblastoma cancer, and congenital defects are affect this age group. Racial disparities, glaucoma occur in patients if they has some family history for glaucoma. Urbanization has given rise in change in lifestyle like poor nutrition food, lack of green leafy vegetables, consumption of fast food, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, which has affected the health of eye & vision and increased obesity has given rise in prevalence of diabetes. Adult aged above at 40 are at higher risk for eye diseases. Rise in prevalence of diabetes has given rise in eye disorders like cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, diabetic macular edema, etc. Diabetes cause damage to eyes which leads to poor vision and blindness. However, to overcome the eye disorders Intraocular Lenses are useful for improving vision and to live the normal life. According to data published by United Nations in 2018, about 55% of the world’s population resided in urban areas, and it is projected that this percentage will increase over the forecast period. However, the growth in diabetes, eye diseases and population in urban areas boosts the demand for Intraocular Lens.

Restrains:

There are some side-effects of lens implant like loss of vision due to detached retina and infection after surgery, may develop debilitating visual symptoms, may under treated or over treated, may need additional eye surgery for repositioning, replacing and removing phakic lens implant, may develop increased intraocular pressure, may develop cataract, cornea may become cloudy which may somewhat restrain the target market growth.
