Introduction:

Position sensors are used in automobiles to determine steering wheel positions, pedal positions, seat positions, and the position of various valves, knobs, and actuators. There are three main types of position sensors: angular, rotary and linear. A position sensor is a device that collects information about the exact position and movement of an object. Information can be acquired by direct contact with the object or by using magnetic sensors. It can also detect the thickness of a part, the level of a fluid, or the angle of rotation of a shaft. The most commonly used of all "position sensors", is the potentiometer because it is a cheap and easy to use position sensor. It uses a wiper contact connected to a mechanical shaft which can be either angular (rotational) or linear (slider type). Position sensors are capable of determining the mechanical position of an object with respect to an arbitrary reference point. Apart from this, these sensors are also able to detect the presence of nearby objects. A position sensor can work in different ways such as it gives a signal that changes depending on the position of the object. It is through these signal differences that the displacement is translated. With each elementary movement, it emits an impulse. Displacement and position are determined by counting the emitted pulses. Position sensors are also being used in agriculture to monitor and optimize crops with GPS technology and to determine the position of automobiles such as tractors in the field. Growing demand from aerospace and defense, healthcare, electronics, automotive and other similar sectors will help the expansion of the global position sensor market in the coming years.
