Global Automotive Electronic Control Unit Overview

Introduction:

An electronic control unit, also called an electronic control module, is an embedded system in automotive electronics that controls one or more electrical systems or subsystems in a car or other motor vehicle. An automotive electronic control unit primarily uses inputs from vehicle sensors such as the crankshaft and camshaft. Basically, the engine ECU controls the fuel injection and in petrol engines, the spark ignition timing, it determines the position of the engine internals using the crankshaft position sensor so that the injector system operates correctly. Timing the two acronyms ECU stands for Engine Control Module and ECU stands for Engine Control Unit represent the same component and are used interchangeably. An electronic control unit is a small device in a vehicle’s body that is responsible for controlling a specific function, each ECU typically contains a dedicated chip that runs its own software or firmware and require power and data connections to operate, an ECU receives inputs from different parts of the vehicle depending on its function, For example, when a passenger presses the door lock/unlock button on the car door or wireless key fob, the door lock ECU will receive an input. The airbag ECU will receive inputs from crash sensors and sensors that detect when someone is sitting in a particular seat. And the automatic emergency braking ECU will receive inputs from a forward-facing radar that detects when the vehicle is approaching an obstacle too quickly. In recent years, modern vehicles are composed of various control units to improve vehicle performance, an automotive electronic control unit manages multiple actuators on an I.C. engine to ensure regular operation of the engine. Thus, significant increase in tangible luxury offerings in vehicles providing higher levels of comfort and safety features is driving the growth of the electronic control unit market. Furthermore, governments are providing attractive incentives and policies to encourage the sale of electric vehicles, which is expected to drive the growth of the electronic control unit market.

Global Automotive Electronic Control Unit Dynamics

The increasing demand for multi-functionality in the vehicle is a key factor expected to drive the growth of the automotive electronic control unit market. Additionally, the growing automotive sector and development of low-cost ECUs are also expected to fuel the growth of the automotive electronic control unit market over the forecast period. Furthermore, government regulations regarding passenger safety and rapidly increasing vehicle production are expected to boost the global automotive electronic control unit market in the near future. Furthermore, increasing individual preferences for antitheft systems, use of ECUs in luxury and hybrid vehicles, as well as huge demand for infotainment systems are expected to support global market growth over the forecast period. However, increasing customer preference for BYOD, system complexity, and operation failures in ECUs are expected to hinder the growth of the automotive electronic control unit market in the near future. Growing demand for advanced driver assistance features is expected to create lucrative opportunities for players operating in the automotive electronic control unit market over the forecast period. Additionally, consumer preference towards alternative vehicle options in developed countries, such as hybrid and battery electric vehicles, is significantly altering the growth of the ECU market. Furthermore, ease of driving, safety concerns, driver safety, and low maintenance are some of the factors driving the growth of the market.

Technological advancement

Increased demand for technologically advanced vehicles such as hybrid vehicles in developed and developing countries is expected to fuel the growth of the ECU market. Luxury vehicles have high integration of automotive electronic systems and to control these technologically advanced systems, automotive electric control units, automotive driving IoT-controlled functions and telematics require high demand for ECUs. Manufacturers involved in the Automotive Electronic Control Unit market are developing advanced versions of their products due to new age technological advancements. Major players of automotive electronic control units are investing more in power systems and creating more modern, time-saving, cost-effective technologies that will positively impact the Automotive Electronic control unit market. In April 2022, AISIN, one of the world's largest OEM manufacturers, joined hands with Nissan to develop its technologically advanced AUTOSAR ECU. AUTOSAR provides many features such as electronic architecture, transfer functions of software development, so that the functionality will be properly tested and integrated with each ECU unit.
