Electronic Skin Market Overview

Electronic Skin Market was valued at US$ 8.4 Billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 16.00% to reach US$ 32.7 Billion by 2034.

Skin is the powerful physical and immunological barrier between body & external environment. Skin act as a highly efficient temperature controller and also act as regulator and hydro-electrolytic sensor at some extent. Skin provides tactile, thermal, pain related information as primary interface between central nervous system and external environment. Joseph Campbell has invented the electronic skin. Electronic Skin is referred to stretchable, flexible, and self-healing electronics which has ability to mimic functionalities of human and animal skin. Electronic Skin is an artificial skin. Electronic Skin brings many potential applications in prosthetics, artificial intelligence, robotics, and health monitoring technologies. Electronic skin has sensors which are embedded for measuring the temperature, pressure, humidity, and airflow. Electronic skin help the body to adjust after transplant and makes robots more sensitive. Use of tiny electronic wires allows the skin for generating impulses that are similar to body’s own nervous system. Electronic skin uses thermal sensors & actuators for precisely mapping the thermal conductivity and temperature of the skin near a wound for preventing it from getting worsening or becoming infected.

Electronic skin sensors such as Chemical sensors has dominated the target market growth with highest share of 15.5%. Health monitoring systems holds 14.6% share. Electronic skin patches are thin, flexible products which are attached to the user’s skin by the use of biocompatible adhesives. Smart patches are wearable sensors which are used in medical industry. Smart patches are applied to the patient’s skin with adhesive and thus features a foam part & embedded electronics for monitoring patients pulse. Electronic skin sensors are wearable thin film sensors which are directly placed on human body for measuring the body parameters such as heartbeat, temperature and sweat composition. Drug delivery systems has dominated the target market growth which holds highest share of greater than 22%. The photovoltaics systems holds share of 13.04%. However, wide applications of electronic skin has enhanced the market growth.

Electronic Skin Market Dynamics

Rising technological advancement and wide applications

Rising technological advancement and wide applications is one of the leading factors for the Electronic Skin Market growth. Electronic skin is used in treating various diseases like cardiovascular disease, etc. It also has potential applications in artificial intelligence, robotics, prosthetics and health monitoring technologies. Electronic Skin has ability to withstand mechanical deformation including stretching & flexing without losing functionality. Artificial skin has inspired innovations in materials for imitating skin’s unique characteristics which includes, biodegradability, stretch ability, mechanical durability and ability for measuring diversity of complex sensations over large areas. Fabrication strategies and new materials are being developed for improving brain-machine interfaces which helps in enabling the transmission of skin’s signals into the body and for making mechanically compliant & multifunctional skin-like electronics. Engineers and scientist has made progress towards materials which will help in detecting pressure, measuring body temperature, blend with surroundings, etc. Newly developed electronic skin with technological advancement has offered various applications which are as follows:

Self-Healing Electronic Skin - Stanford University researchers has developed an electronic skin which is capable of healing itself by combination of self-healing nickel and plastic, a conductive metal. Newly developed electronic skin can detect both (downward, and bending) pressure and angle of normal human handshake. Lighting Electronic Skin - At Berkeley, University of California has created an electronic skin which lights up when touched. Pressure triggered a reaction in skin which lit up red, yellow, blue, and green LEDs, as pressure gets increased the light gets brighter. Material used was thinner, composed of synthetic rubber and plastic. Electronic skin was made up of hundreds of circuits which contains transistor, pressure sensor, and tiny LED. According to research team this new invention will be beneficial in skin for prosthetic limbs & robotics. Sweating Electronic Skin – Northwestern University Research team has developed new first of its kind soft, and flexible microfluidic device which easily adheres to the skin & helps in measuring the wearer’s sweat to see how his body is responding to exercise. Device is low-cost, simple and analyze key biomarkers for helping the user to decide quickly if there is any adjustment like replenishing electrolytes. Newly developed device also help in detecting presence of biomarker for cystic fibrosis and will be used in diagnosing diseases in future.

For instance, in 2017, Research team led by Professor Kyung-In Jang of Robotics Engineering has collected, analyzed, and diagnosed bio-signals by wirelessly transmission to mobile application from soft electronic skin. New electronic skin microsystem was developed by an international research team led by Professor Kyung-In Jang a professor of Robotics Engineering at South Korea’s Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, and John A. Rogers a director of Northwestern University’s Center for Bio-Integrated Electronics. Newly developed electronic skin microsystem help in tracking respiration, heart rate, movement of muscle and other health data, and thus, transmit it to smartphone. It has features like smaller size, greater flexibility and also has ability to stick self-adhesive patch (soft silicone) with 4cm and can be fit anywhere on body. For instance, in 2020, Ultra-conformal drawn on skin electronics for multifunctional motion artifact free sensing and point of care treatment. Recent advancement in wearable bioelectronics has directly embedded to epidermal surface and has become a promising solution for epidermal sensing in future. Electrical stimulation that is based on drawn on skin electronics has determined accelerated healing of skin wounds. However, rising technological advancement and wide applications has boost the demand for Electronic Skin market.

Restrains:

Electronic skin are not readily available and are extremely expensive. Maintenance of electronic skin are more costly. Defects in robotic electronic skin may cause accidents. Electronic skin are more difficult in practicing. Some challenges with self-healing material in electronic skin is that they are not transparent and when they are wet they do not work efficiently. However, expensive cost and challenges with e-skin material may restrain the target market growth.
