Breathing Circuits Market Overview

Breathing Circuits Market was valued at US$ 1.4 Billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.80% to reach US$ 3 Billion by 2034. Breathing Circuit is a breathing system which is a medical device used for removing carbon-dioxide, delivering oxygen, and delivering inhalational anesthetic agents to a patient. Breathing Circuits are classified into, open breathing circuits, closed breathing Circuits, semi-open breathing circuits, and semi-closed breathing circuits. Breathing circuits contains various components which are configured by allowing patient to breath or be ventilated with gas mixture differing from room air. The common components of breathing circuit includes, tubing to direct gas flow, fresh gas flow, allowing scavenge of waste gas & reservoir bag for storing gas and assisting with ventilation, adjustable pressure limiting valve for controlling pressure within the system. Breathing system receives three sources of gas which includes, exhaled dead space gas, fresh gas, and exhaled gas from alveoli. During inspiration ventilated patients receive gas at positive pressure and receive atmospheric pressure during exhalation. APL (adjustable pressure limiting) valve helps in allowing a variable pressure within anesthetic system by using spring loaded valve. Controlled leak of gas allowed from system enables to control patient’s airway pressure. Reservoir bag helps in allowing fresh gas flow during expiration which minimize the amount of fresh gas required for preventing rebreathing. Reservoir bag also allows the anesthetist for monitoring breathing pattern of spontaneous breathing patient. Reservoir bag are made from plastic or rubber. Reservoir bag comes in size between 0.5 litres to 6 litres. Inspiratory limb helps in allowing passage of fresh gas flow for inspiration to patient for inspiration. Expiratory limb helps in allowing passage of expired gas from patient. Rise in prevalence of respiratory diseases has given positive impact on breathing circuit market growth.

Breathing Circuits Market Dynamics

Rise in prevalence of pulmonary diseases, lung cancer, and rate of urbanization

Rise in prevalence of pulmonary diseases and rate of urbanization is one of the leading factors for the Breathing Circuits Market growth. Urbanization has given rise in use of smoking as a new fashion or lifestyle. Smoking has become the major cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Smoke contains harmful chemicals which damage the linings of lungs & airways which led to respiratory and lung cancer diseases. Cigarette or tobacco smoke is dangerous to health as it moves more deeply into respiratory tract & particles get deposited in alveoli and airways. Smoking has become major risk factor in cause of lung cancer. For instance, in June 2016, difference in lung cancer mortality between city and rural areas were observed in Madrid region and the study determined that most urbanized areas of Madrid region were characterized by higher lung cancer mortality rate. Smoking prevalence from 1985 to 2000 was very high in urban areas and thus it was increased with rapid urbanization. For instance, in 2016, (NIH), the relationship between cancer incidence and urbanization in Iran were conducted by using Quantile Regression. Data obtained by Ministry of Health & Medical Education and relationship between urbanization and cancer morbidity was investigated by quantile regression and determined that lung cancer, pancreas, prostate, colorectal and breast cancers increasing with rate of urbanization. 95th percentile for lung cancer, 90th percentile was maximum increase rate of breast cancer, 95th percentile was of prostate cancer, 75th percentile was of colorectal cancer, and 10th percentile for pancreas cancer. According to the results, it was determined that there was significant impact of rising urbanization on cancer morbidity due to risk factors like more pollution in urban areas, poor nutrition food, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol intake, etc. According to data published by United Nations in 2018, about 55% of the world’s population resided in urban areas, and it is projected that this percentage will increase over the forecast period. However, the growth in pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and population in urban areas boosts the demand for breathing circuit market.

Rise in industrialization and air pollution

Rise in industrialization and air pollution has become the major factor in target market growth. Increasing air pollution has given rise in adverse health outcomes like allergic, respiratory diseases. Air pollutants has contributed in development of allergies. Effects of air pollutants on allergic diseases includes, allergic rhinitis, epigenetic regulation, development of asthma, etc. Air pollution caused by industrialization is associated with respiratory diseases. Major source of nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, is fossil fuel. Fossil fuels are combusted by factories, power stations, and motor vehicles. Rise in industrialization has increased release of harmful gases which causes air pollution. Air pollution has led to respiratory diseases like allergic rhinitis, asthma. In industrialized areas prevalence of allergic rhinitis is increasing. In industrialized areas fossil fuel combustion is increased which has led to increase in nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, carbon dioxide etc. Urbanization has given rise in air pollution due to industrialization and rising use of vehicles. In 2016, study in European region has determined that about 5% to 7% of lung cancer was observed in people with no smokers and ex-smokers were attributable to higher level of air pollution as expressed by nitrogen dioxide and road bearing heavy traffic. Air pollutants caused by industrialization plays role in development of respiratory diseases. However, rise in industrialization and air pollution is expected to give boost growth in breathing circuit market.

Restrains:

Fresh gas flow is required for breathing circuits which is high and increase the cost. Disconnection, or leakage in breathing circuit causes critical incidents in anesthesia. Obstruction of breathing circuit increases peak inspiratory pressures or total failure of ventilation which may occur in tracheal tube. During inspiratory phase excess inflow to breathing circuit from anesthesia machines and obstruction of scavenging pathways can cause barotrauma. Malfunctioning valves in breathing circuit can cause critical problems in patients which can even result in death. However, high cost and some disadvantages that led to critical conditions in patients may somewhat restrain the breathing circuit market growth.
