Bioreactors Market Overview

Bioreactors Market was valued at USD 5.5 Billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 28.90% to reach USD 55.9 Billion by 2034.

Bioreactors are complex systems. Bioreactors are designed for imitating natural production of biomolecules. Bioreactor system is made up of control unit, vessel, auxiliary components and equipment. In vessel all biochemical reaction and living cells occur. In control units, all parameters which are essential to cells are controlled. Equipment & auxiliary components connect and enable the whole system for functioning. Whole system function as an organism, produce desired product under specific conditions. Depending on size of production bioreactors are divided into three scales. Laboratory scale range from 0.5 to 10 liters, industrial scale range from 500 to 5000 liters. Type of bioreactor depends on which molecule will be produced with it and which cell line & components we use.

Bioreactor system is fitted with accessories like sensors, probes, tubing and stirrers. Bioreactor are the vessels which has been designed and produced for providing effective environment for enzymes or whole cells for transforming biochemical into products. Inactivation of cells or sterilization has been carried out in bioreactor such as in treatment of water. Continuous stirred tank bioreactors, airlift bioreactors, packed bed bioreactors, fluidized bed bioreactors, bubble column bioreactors, etc. Bioreactor includes, rocker, stirred tank, air lift, and fixed bed. Smaller scale bioreactors are the glass systems which can be sterilized in an autoclave, multiple use bioreactors requires cleaning after running of each cell culture. Bioreactors are used in various types of industries like medical, food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Bioreactor is used for upstream processing. Bioreactors are used in production of vaccines, cell therapies, gene therapies and therapeutics. However, rising pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and use of bioreactors for production of medical and pharmaceutical compounds has given positive impact on target market growth.

Bioreactors Market Drivers & Restraints

Increase in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, rising prevalence of diseases and rate of urbanization is one of the leading factors for the Bioreactor Market growth. Urbanization has given rise in consumption of western food, processed food, frozen packed foods, which are unhealthy and affected the health of human being has given rise in prevalence of disease. Urbanization has affected health condition due to emergence of infectious diseases, pollution related health conditions, inadequate house condition and consumption of poor nutrition food. Due to rapid urbanization there is rise in overcrowded settlements, inadequate housing conditions, and lack of infrastructure for water and sanitation which has caused higher risk of infectious diseases. Inadequate hygiene at fast food stalls, rising consumption of unhealthy fast food has given rise in infectious diseases. For example, Typhoid and Cholera are transmitted through water and food contaminated with human faeces which contains pathogen Urbanization has given rise in emergence and spread of arboviral disease like Zika virus, Chikungunya, Dengue which are highly adapted in urban areas. Highly connected urban areas and dense areas has become major hotspot in outbreak of disease like SARS and COVID-19. Medicinal drugs helps in preventing disease and increase immunity power and thus has become important in prevention and spread of disease. Rising diseases has given rise in research & development activities, for development of new drug. Pharmaceutical industries are rising due to clinical research, academics, pharmaceutical journalism, hospital and community pharmacy, quality control, quality assurance, manufacturing new medicinal product, pharmaceutical ,marketing, etc. Biotech industries are growing due to acquisition by big pharmaceutical companies, promising regulatory environment and strong earnings, etc. Rise in aging population, desire for new advancement in pharmaceuticals, medicines, and genetics has given boost to the biotechnology industries. Most important use of bioreactors is for production of medical and pharmaceutical compounds. They are used for making pharmaceutical products like insulin and antibiotics. Bioreactors are sterile vessels with gassing facilities and temperature controls which are required for starting biochemical reaction. Bioreactors support the applications for production of gene therapies, vaccines, cell therapies and therapeutics. Due to beneficial properties bioreactors are used in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. According to data published by United Nations in 2018, about 55% of the world’s population resided in urban areas, and it is projected that this percentage will increase over the forecast period. However, the growth in pharmaceutical & biotechnology industries, rising prevalence of disease, and population in urban areas boosts the demand for Bioreactor Market.

Restrains:

Some bioreactors like large and flat rocker bioreactors do not scale well while single-use bioreactor technologies are higher consumable cost, has to rely on vendors, has difficulty in efficiently producing the product in bulk, limit the number of gamma irradiation facilities. Membrane based bioreactors has disadvantage of membrane fouling. However, some kind of disadvantages may somewhat restrain the target market growth.
