Global LNG As A Bunker Overview

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is a colourless, clear, non-corrosive liquid and non-toxic that is converted to liquid by cooling of natural gas at a cryogenic temperature of -162°C. Furthermore, LNG is expected to be less costly than marine gas oil, which drives the LNG as a Bunker Fuel market

According to the latest mandate by International Maritime Organization it was stated that the proposed sulphur content limit wil be reduced to 0.5% from current 3.5% , on the global basis effective from 2020. Hence, it is proven that use of LPG as ship fuel will reduce sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions by 90%-95%

However, the cost of building or retrofitting LNG engine ship is relatively high, that restrain the market.  Moreover, LNG also requires more space for storage tanks i.e. 3% of container ship’s twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) slots.

The global LNG as a bunker fuel market is segmented on the basis of navigation area, application and region.

On the basis of navigation area, the global LNG as a bunker fuel market is segmented into Inland Waterways and Ocean & Sea.

Further, on the basis of application the market is segmented into LNG Ships, and Others. LNG sips segment is projected to account for highest market share over the other segment, which is attributed to increasing trade activities across the countries.

On the basis of region, the target market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Middle East, and Africa. The LNG as a bunker fuel market in Europe accounted for highest revenue share, in 2018 and is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period owing to increased capital investments for LNG bunkering, coupled with increasing seaborne trade from Europe.

Key players operating in the global LNG as a bunker fuel market includes Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Gasum Oy, Statoil ASA, Barents Natural Gas AS, The Linde Group, ENGIE SA, Korea Gas Corporation, Kunlun Energy Company Ltd., Eni s.p.A, CNOOC Limited, and Energize.
