Shore Power Market is estimated to be US$ 4.3 Billion by 2034; Rising Port Infrastructure Development to Boost Market Growth

Published Date: March 2024

Shore power significantly reduces the emission of pollutants, including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide, as ships can turn off their engines. Using shore power can be more cost-effective for ships compared to running their own generators. Since ships do not need to operate onboard generators, there is a reduction in noise pollution in the port area.

In order to handle more ships and encourage the use of shore power, ports all around the world are investing in shore power infrastructure. As more ports are outfitted to offer shore power services, this development is anticipated to fuel shore power market growth. Shore power technology is projected to continue to advance, with a focus on standardized systems that are easily adaptable to various ship types. Shore electricity will be easier to get and more affordable as a result of these upgrades for both ports and vessels.

The report “Shore Power Market, By Component (Cables & Accessories, Switchgear, Frequency Converter, Transform, and Others), By Installation Type (Shipside, and Shoreside), By Connection (Retrofit, and New Installation), By Power Rating (30-60 MVA, Up to 30MVA, and Above 60 MVA) and By Region (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa) - Trends, Analysis and Forecast till 2034”

 Key Highlights:

  • In July 2023, Rotterdam Shortsea Terminals (RST) and Dutch logistics company Samskip launched Green Shore Power initiative, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions produced by vessels docked by providing new clean shore-powered energy solutions. The Samskip Innovator offered an on-site demonstration of the changeover between ship power and the new shore power during the event. Samskip claims that the shore power solution is a first for ports in the Netherlands.

Analyst View:

Shore power capabilities are being increasingly added to older ships, while shore power connectivity is being incorporated into the design of new ships. As more vessels become able to connect to shore electricity, this tendency will grow the market. For shore power systems to be compatible and interoperable, international standards must be developed and adopted. The installation of shore power at ports across the world will be made simpler as standards develop and are more commonly adopted.
