The electric vehicle battery recycling is the process of collecting, dismantling and reprocessing of used batteries from electric vehicles to recover valuable materials and reduce environmental impact. As electric vehicles become increasingly popular, the demand for lithium-ion batteries, which power most electric vehicles is significantly growing. Governments across the globe are implementing stricter regulations on battery disposal and hazardous waste, driving companies to invest in recycling to compliant and environmentally responsible, is estimated to boost electric vehicle battery recycling market share.

Key Highlights
- In September 2024, Europe’s new lithium-ion battery recycling facility has opened in Zawiercie, Poland, aimed to make significant step in Europe’s electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain. This facility designed to have 12,000 metric tons of Li-ion used batteries process capacity, which was the largest battery recycling facilities in Europe.
Report Analysis:
End of life of Lithium-Ion batteries:
- The end of life (EOL) of lithium-ion batteries refers to the point at which batteries can no longer effectively hold or deliver a charge for their intended purpose, most commonly in electric vehicles (EVs). Lithium-ion batteries reach EOL when their capacity falls to about 70–80% of the original. This degradation occurs due to factors such as charge/discharge cycles, high operating temperatures, and chemical breakdown over time. There are two phases at EOL:
- Second-Life Applications: Before a lithium-ion battery is disabled and recycled, it may be repurposed for less demanding applications, such as stationary energy storage systems for homes, solar grids, or telecom towers. This second life extends the battery’s utility by delaying recycling.
- Recycling and Material Recovery: Once the battery becomes non-functional even in second-life uses, it enters the recycling phase. In this phase, batteries are disassembled, and valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper are extracted using processes such as pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, or direct recycling. These recovered materials can be re-used in the production of new batteries, reducing the need for raw mining.
