Construction Silica Sand Market is estimated to be US$ 36.85 billion by 2030 with a CAGR of 6.10% during the forecast period

Published Date: June 2022

One of the most often used varieties of sand in the world is silica sand, sometimes referred to as industrial sand. Industrial silica sand has been mined for thousands of years, and between 3000-5000 BC it was employed for the first time for metallurgical and glass-making processes. Road paving, glass manufacturing, foundries and coal-fired boilers, oil and water filtering, industrial casting, and sandblasting are just a few of the current uses for silica sand. In addition, it is employed in the hydraulic fracturing procedure, where silica sand demand has surged recently. This is due to the beneficial characteristics of silica sand, including its strength, high silica concentration, and resistance to heat and chemical reactions. Among the industries that employ it most frequently are glass, foundries, construction, ceramics, and the chemical sector. A practical filler for paints, plastics, and rubber, silica sand is also utilised in water purification and agriculture. Industrial sand is a component of substances including silicone gel, silicon tetrachloride, and sodium silicate. One of the primary drivers of this rise is the increased use of silica sand in a range of industries, including building, glassmaking, and hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Due to its composition and texture, industrial silica sands are appropriate for a range of industrial applications. As a result, there is a sizable demand for industrial silica sand from a variety of sectors.

Region Analysis:

North America, is expected to hold the second-largest share of CAGR value in 2020. This is due to the region's high consumption of silica sand used for glass-making. The shale gas industry's increased need is expected to further propel market expansion due to the increase in demand for frac sand. Due to the size of its shale gas sector, the United States is predicted to be the top consumption region. Due to the establishment of numerous businesses producing frac sand, this area is in high demand.

Key Highlights:

  • In order to create moulds, prototypes, and parts for the automotive and aviation sectors, researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have created a new water-soluble polymer that binds silica sand. The polyethyleneimine (PEI) binder created by ORNL researchers increased the strength of sand components when compared to conventional binders. Binder jet printed items that are initially porous are made eight times stronger by applying cyanoacrylate to fill in the spaces. The PEI binder is strengthened by the polymer's response to bind with the cyanoacrylate during curing.
  • By finalising an offtake conditions agreement with two South Korean businesses for the supply of silica sand from its Arrowsmith North project in November 2021, VRX achieved a key milestone. Hyundai Motors, Kia Motors, and Renault Samsung Motors depend on offtake partners Dong A Heung Eop Mining Co and DongNam Corporation as major foundry sand suppliers. The company anticipates that this terms sheet will boost future deliveries into the South Korean market as businesses attempt to replace declining volumes from current suppliers.
